So where do you start with self-awareness? For years I've been teaching folks to develop a one-page "Profile of Self." This is a simple tool that you can use to organize the many facets of your identity so they are easier to articulate. A simplified version of my profile looks like this:

It's very simply a tool to bring together what I know about myself. It's also a powerful tool for trust-building and establishing expectations. When I manage someone new I give them a copy and we talk it through. I then charge them with doing the same -- developing their own Profile of Self -- to help me understand who they are, why they do what they do, what they do best, and where they thrive.
