Summary

In 2012, YES Prep Public Schools, a leading Charter Management Organization serving more than 7,000 students, discussed the possibility of launching a program to train a pipeline of leaders. As YES continued to expand at a rapid rate, they foresaw the need to fill essential school leadership and administrative positions, and they realized that hiring from outside of the organization would always be less efficient and cost-effective than investing in current leaders. In 2013, they anted up on the idea by hiring a full-time Director of Leadership Development -- Dustin Peterson -- to launch the initiative.

Along with a group of committed YES Leaders, Dustin initiated the vision of developing a world-class leadership and management training program unrivaled in the field of education. Informed by focus groups among YES leaders, the latest research in the field of leadership, and his almost 10 years of experience in both for-profit and nonprofit leadership, Dustin crafted a curriculum focused on team building, developing skills in coaching and management, and tackling complex problems. The pilot year produced 22 Leading Excellence Fellows who showed vast improvements in leadership and management skills with growth across the board in key quantitative and qualitative metrics.

Leading Excellence training sessions received a 97% effective/highly effective satisfaction rating for quality. In addition, 21% of Fellows came into the program with some or very little knowledge of the content and 92% left the program with comfortable or expert knowledge and understanding of the leadership concepts. More importantly, participants in the leadership and management training felt they had more opportunity to do what they do best, received more praise, had higher engagement in their work, and felt like the organization was invested in their development, resulting in higher commitment and retention.
